Squad for Mac is in private beta.
Each entry gives the symptom, the cause, and the fix. If your problem is not here, choose Help > Email Support in the app.

Sign-in

”Incorrect password. Please try again.”

Cause: The password does not match the account. Fix: Type the password again. If you forgot it, select Forgot your password? and follow the steps. See Get started with Squad for Mac.

”No account found with this email. Create one first.”

Cause: No Squad account uses this email. Fix: Check the email for typing mistakes. To make an account, select Create an account under “New to Squad?”.

”That code is wrong or expired. Check the latest email, or send a new code.”

Cause: The code does not match, or it is too old. Only the latest code works. Fix: Select Send a new code and type the code from the newest email. For how long a code works, see Limits and defaults.

Sign-in goes to “Check your email”

Cause: Your account’s email is not verified yet. Squad sent a new code. Fix: Type the code from the email.

”Too many attempts. Wait a few minutes, then try again.”

Cause: Squad blocks sign-in for a short time after many tries. Fix: Wait a few minutes, then try again.

”This account signs in with Google, so there is no password to reset.”

Cause: You made your account with Google. It has no password. The Mac app has no Google sign-in button. Fix: Choose Help > Email Support for help with your account.

”Your session ended. Sign in again to continue.”

Cause: Your sign-in expired or was ended. Fix: Sign in again.

”Squad can’t be reached right now. Check your connection, and we’ll keep trying.”

Cause: Your Mac cannot reach Squad. Fix: Check your internet connection, then sign in again. When you are already signed in and Squad cannot refresh your session, the window shows the reason and tries again on its own. To use another account, select Sign in with a different account.

Before your squad opens

These screens show after you sign in. Each moves on by itself when the problem is gone.

”Squad can’t check your squad right now. It keeps trying.”

Cause: A check on your account or squad failed. Fix: Wait. Check your internet connection. Squad keeps trying.

The setup screen opens

Cause: You signed in with an account that has no squad yet. Fix: Squad for Mac opens the setup screen. Set up your squad there. See Set up a new squad.

Get your squad

Cause: The email that you signed in with has no active Squad subscription. The subscription never started, ended, is paused, or is not active. Fix: Select Subscribe, or subscribe, resume, or renew on squad.so. The window opens by itself when the subscription is active. If you paid with a different email, sign out and sign in with that one. If someone invited you, select I have an invite link….

”This squad is paused”

Cause: You were invited to a squad that is locked: its subscription is paused, canceled, or past due, or Squad paused it. Fix: Ask the owner to reactivate the squad. Only the owner can. The window opens by itself when they do. To work in another of your squads meanwhile, select Open and its name.

”You no longer have access to” a squad

Cause: The owner removed you from their squad, or you left it, and you have no squad of your own. Fix: Ask the owner to invite you again, then select I have an invite link… and paste the new link. Or select Get a squad of your own.

Your squad is locked

Cause: You are the owner, and the squad’s subscription is canceled, paused, or past due, or Squad paused the squad. The screen says “Your subscription is canceled”, “Your subscription is paused”, “Your last payment didn’t go through”, or “Your squad is paused”. Fix: Select the button on the screen: Resubscribe, Resume subscription, or Update payment. When Squad paused your squad, email support@squad.so. Before a canceled squad is deleted, you can select Export squad data to keep a copy. With more than one squad, your other squads stay open. See Billing.

”Upgrading your squad”

Cause: Squad moves your squad to a better computer. Your teammates, conversations, and memory come along. Fix: Wait. The window moves on by itself when it is done.

”Please accept our Terms of Service”

Cause: Squad needs you to accept its terms to go on. Fix: Select I have read and agree to the Terms of Service, then Accept and continue.

Connection

The sidebar says “Reconnecting…”

Cause: The live connection to Squad dropped. The menu bar panel shows Reconnecting too. Fix: Check your internet connection. Squad reconnects by itself. Your squad keeps working in the cloud meanwhile.

”The connection dropped before Squad heard back, so this may have gone through. Check before trying again.”

Cause: The connection dropped while Squad sent your change. Fix: Look whether the change is there before you do it again.

”Couldn’t switch squads”

Cause: The squad cannot be opened from this account, or the switch failed. Fix: Read the reason in the alert. Check that you signed in with the account that is in that squad.

Notifications

Notifications do not arrive

Check these causes in order:
  1. Notifications are off in macOS. Settings > Notifications > On this Mac says “Notifications are off for Squad in System Settings, so none of these can reach you.” Select Open System Settings and allow notifications for Squad.
  2. The switch is off. Turn on Questions, Email that needs you, or Replies and mentions in On this Mac.
  3. Squad holds the question. With Hold non-urgent decisions on, only urgent and high-priority questions come right away. The others arrive in one summary.
  4. The notch shows it instead. With Squad in the notch on, a new question opens the notch and goes to Notification Center without a banner.
  5. Squad is quiet. During a meeting with Stay quiet in meetings on, or while the notch is snoozed, notifications show without sound, and the notch does not open by itself.
  6. Squad was not open. When Squad opens, it shows banners only for recent questions. Older ones wait in Needs you. See Limits and defaults.
  7. You are looking at it. Squad does not notify you about the conversation that is open on your screen.
  8. Someone answered it already. A question answered on the web or on another Mac leaves Notification Center.
See Settings, notifications, and updates.

Unread replies do not count in the Dock or the menu bar

Cause: Replies and mentions is off. With it off, replies count nowhere, also not for your other squads. Fix: Turn on Replies and mentions in Settings > Notifications > On this Mac.

A notification button does not work

Cause: Actions that change something need your Mac to be unlocked. Fix: Unlock your Mac and try again. If an answer fails, Needs you opens so that you can answer there. If a reply to a mention in a group chat fails, a message says “Your reply wasn’t sent” with the reason, and the group chat opens with your words in the box.

Mac access and permissions

Mac access is not connected

Cause and fix: Look at the status line under Let your squad use this Mac in Settings > This Mac > Mac access. Your Mac counts as connected only while Squad is open on it, signed in, with one of your own squads open and the switch on. In a squad that you were invited to, Mac access is off until you open one of your own squads. See Mac access.

Delegate does not send your screen, or a screen request fails

Cause: Squad does not have the Screen Recording permission. Fix: In the Delegate panel, select the screen button beside Send to and the teammate’s name. Its tooltip starts with “Let Squad see your screen.” Or turn on Squad in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording. The teammate is told that Screen Recording is off and can ask again after you turn it on.

Delegate does not bring the browser page

Cause: macOS did not allow Squad to read the browser, or the browser is not supported. Firefox is not supported. Fix: Allow Squad for that browser in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation. See Delegate, talk, and use Siri.

Esc does not close notch cards from another app

Cause: Close notch cards with Esc from any app needs the Accessibility permission. The setting says “Squad needs the Accessibility permission to see Esc in other apps.” Fix: Turn on Squad in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility.

Talking to your squad does not work

App problems

”Squad stopped responding last time, sorry about that.”

Cause: Squad froze the last time it ran, and it was closed while it did not respond. Fix: Nothing to do. With Share usage and crash reports on, Squad sends a report to the Squad team, with nothing that you wrote. If it happens again, choose Help > Email Support. See Share usage and crash reports.

Updates do not install

See Updates.

The window is gone, but Squad still runs

Cause: By design. Closing the window does not quit Squad, so the menu bar, the notch, and notifications keep working. Fix: Click Squad in the Dock, or choose Open Squad in the menu bar panel. To quit, choose Quit Squad in the menu bar panel’s ⋯ (More) menu.

Back does not go to the squad you left

Cause: By design. Switching squads starts the Back history over. Fix: Switch back with the squad switcher.

A place is missing from the sidebar

Cause: By design. The sidebar shows Today and the places that you pinned. The other places are under More, which starts folded. Contacts and Wallet show only when they are available for your squad, and What your squad knows only for the owner and Administrators. Fix: Select More, then select the place, or press P on it to pin it. You can also open it from the Go menu or with ⌘K. See The sidebar on Squad for Mac.

”Couldn’t update your sidebar. Try again in a moment.”

Cause: A pin, an unpin, or a move of a place did not save. The sidebar keeps the order that Squad saved last. Fix: Pin or move the place again.

Roles and access

A Viewer cannot send

Cause: A Viewer’s access is read-only. The composer says “Your access is view-only, so you can read this conversation but not send messages.” Other actions say “Your access is view-only, so you can’t change anything in this squad.” Fix: Ask the owner to make you a Collaborator. See Change a person’s role.

”Only the squad owner or an Administrator can do that.”

Cause: The action needs the owner or an Administrator. The message names your role. Fix: Ask the owner or an Administrator. For owner-only actions, the message is “Only the squad owner can do that."

"This chat is not available”

Cause: The owner or an Administrator limited you to some teammates, and this teammate is not shared with you. Fix: Ask the owner or an Administrator to share the teammate with you. See Limit a person to some teammates.

Chat and squad problems

”Group chats aren’t available for this squad right now.”

Cause: Your squad cannot run group chats yet. It is not on the live chat channel, or the Squad tools on your squad’s computer are too old for group chats. Fix: Wait and try again. Until then, a banner in the Squad chat says “Your teammates see new messages here the next time they work, not at once."

"Your squad isn’t answering right now”

Cause: Your squad has group chats, but its computer has not checked in with Squad for a while, or it restarted and has not checked in yet. Your group chats stay in the sidebar, and a line in the Squad chat says “Your squad isn’t answering right now, so new messages can’t reach your teammates. Try again in a few minutes.” A message that you send there shows “Not sent” with “Your squad isn’t answering right now, so this message didn’t reach your teammates. Try again in a few minutes.” Add teammates in a new conversation says “Your squad isn’t answering right now, so a group chat can’t start. Try again in a few minutes.” Fix: Wait a few minutes, then select Retry on the message. If it lasts, see Still stuck.

A teammate’s reply failed with “Your AI connection expired.”

Cause: The sign-in to your squad’s AI expired. A banner may also say “Your ChatGPT sign-in expired. Your squad can’t work until you reconnect it.” Fix: As the owner or an Administrator, select Reconnect, which opens Settings > AI. Other roles must ask the owner or an Administrator. See Connect your AI.

”This conversation is too long for” a teammate’s model

Cause: The conversation grew too long for the model that the teammate uses. Sending the same message again sends the same long conversation. Fix: Select Start a new conversation under the failed reply. A new conversation with the teammate opens, with your message in the box (if the box is empty, paste your message). Send it. Or pick a model that reads more at once, then select Retry. In a group chat, start a new conversation yourself. See Choose models and manage AI accounts.

The composer says a teammate is paused

Cause: The teammate is paused, so it cannot take messages. Fix: As the owner or an Administrator, select Resume and the teammate’s name. See Pause a teammate.

”Couldn’t upload” a file

Cause: The upload failed. Your other files still attach. Fix: Attach the file again.

A banner says your last payment failed, or your subscription ends

Cause: The squad’s payment failed, or the subscription is canceled and ends on a date. Fix: As the owner, select Update payment, Keep My Subscription, or Billing. Other roles must ask the owner. See Billing.

Today says your squad’s computer is low on disk or full

Cause: The disk on your squad’s computer is filling up. When it is full, your teammates can stop working. Fix: Select Ask and your chief of staff’s name to free up space, then send the request. See Your cloud computer’s disk is low or full.
