Squad for Mac is in private beta.
Squad for Mac lets you give your squad work without opening the main window. These ways are Mac only. A Viewer cannot open the Delegate panel or talk to the squad.

Delegate from any app

The Delegate panel opens over the app that you use, like Spotlight. Each job starts a new conversation with the teammate that you pick.
1

Open the panel

Press ⌥Space in any app. In Squad, you can also choose Delegate… in the File menu (⌘N), in the menu bar panel’s ⋯ menu, or in the right-click menu of the peek that opens when you point to the notch.
2

Pick the teammate

The panel opens on your chief of staff. Select another teammate’s face to send the job to that teammate.
3

Type the job

Type what the teammate should do.
4

Send it

Select Send to and the teammate’s name, or press ⌘Return.
The panel says “Sent to” and the teammate’s name, then closes. Focus goes back to the app that you were in. You hear from the teammate when it replies. Esc, or a click somewhere else, closes the panel without sending. Pressing ⌥Space again also closes it. A Viewer who presses ⌥Space sees “Your access is view-only, so you can’t hand work to the squad.” When you are signed out, ⌥Space opens the main window.

The page that you have open

When you open the panel from Safari, Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, or Chromium, the page that you have open goes with the job. A chip shows the page’s title and the browser. The teammate gets the page’s title and address in your message, not the page’s text. Firefox is not supported. To send without it, select the X on the chip (Leave the page out). The first time, macOS asks you to allow Squad to control that browser. If you say no, the page is left out.

Your screen

When Squad can see your screen, a picture of the front window of the app that you were in goes with the job. Squad takes the picture once, when you open the panel. Nothing is taken in the background or kept on your Mac. A chip shows the picture and the app’s name. The teammate gets the picture as an attached file. To send without it, select the X on the chip (Leave your screen out). Until Squad can see your screen, an icon button beside Send to and the teammate’s name asks macOS for the Screen Recording permission. Its tooltip starts with “Let Squad see your screen.” See Let your teammates use your Mac.

Send selected text with the Services menu

1

Select text or a link

In any app, select the text or the link to send.
2

Choose Send to Squad

Choose Send to Squad in the app’s Services menu, or in the right-click menu under Services.
3

Send the job

The Delegate panel opens with the text in it. Add what the teammate should do and send it.

Talk to your squad

1

Hold the shortcut and speak

Hold ⌃⌥Space in any app and speak. The notch shows who gets the message and your words as you speak.
2

Let go to send

Let go of the keys. The message goes out, and the notch says that it was sent.
A quick tap of ⌃⌥Space keeps Squad listening until you tap again. Listening also stops by itself after a while. See Limits and defaults. The first time, macOS asks for access to the microphone and to speech recognition. Squad turns your speech into text on your Mac. A Viewer sees “Your access is view-only, so you can’t send messages to the squad.” When your language cannot be transcribed on your Mac, Squad says to add it in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.

Who gets the message

  1. Start with a teammate’s name to send the message to that teammate, for example “Nina, find venues for the launch.” Forms such as “Ask Nina to…” and “Hey Nina” work too. The full name, the mention name, or a first name that only one teammate has all work.
  2. Without a name, the message goes to the teammate whose chat is open in the main window, but only when the main window is in front.
  3. Otherwise, it goes to your chief of staff.
When the main window is in front with a conversation with that teammate open, the message goes to that conversation. Otherwise it goes to today’s voice conversation with the teammate, or starts one. Say “new topic” or “start over” to start a new conversation.

Hear the answer

With Hear the answer on, Squad reads the teammate’s reply aloud in that teammate’s voice when it arrives soon after your question. The words light up in the notch as they are read. Talking again stops the reading. A later reply is not read aloud. It comes as a notification. While the notch is on, it also shows in the notch with Play for a limited time. When the reply comes after a much longer time, Squad stops waiting for it, and the answer is only in the chat. See Limits and defaults.

Stay quiet in meetings

With Stay quiet in meetings on, Squad stays quiet while another app uses your microphone or camera, or while your screen is shared:
  • Squad does not speak. An answer to a spoken question waits in the notch with Play.
  • Squad plays no sounds. Notifications still show, without sound.
  • The notch does not open by itself. Questions wait, then come out when the meeting ends.
Both switches are in Settings > This Mac > General, where you can also change the shortcut. See General settings for this Mac.

Siri and the Shortcuts app

Squad adds these actions to Siri and the Shortcuts app. You can say a phrase to Siri, or use an action in a shortcut.

Spotlight

Spotlight finds your teammates, every task in the squad that is not done, and your docs. Open a result to open it in Squad. Squad clears these from Spotlight when you sign out or switch squads.

Check that it works

Press ⌥Space, type a short job, and press ⌘Return. A new conversation with your chief of staff shows in the main window.
