Squad for Mac is in private beta.
Projects work the same in Squad for Mac and in the web dashboard. For how to make projects, write their notes, move conversations, and archive or delete projects, see Group conversations into projects. Only Squad for Mac can give a project a folder, because the folder is on your Mac. Teammates in the project can then open and save files in that folder.

Before you start

  • You are the owner. Only the owner can give a project a folder, change it, or remove it.
  • Let your squad use this Mac is on, on this Mac. A project’s folder is one of the folders that you share in Mac access. See Let your teammates use your Mac.
  • The project is open, not archived. An archived project’s folder cannot change.

Give a project a folder

1

Open the folder menu

On the project’s page, open Pick a folder. When the project has a folder, the menu is Change.
2

Pick a folder

Choose one of the shared folders on this Mac. A folder marked “(read only)” is shared as Read only. To share a new folder, choose Share Another Folder…, choose the folder, and select Share. A folder shared this way can be read and written. When it shows in the menu, choose it from Pick a folder.
The folder line shows the path, the Mac’s name, and whether the folder is read and write or read only. No Folder in the menu removes the folder from the project. Without a folder, every role sees “No folder yet. Pick one on this Mac and teammates can open and save files in it.” In the web dashboard, the page says that the folder is picked in Squad on your Mac.
  • When Mac access is off and the project has no folder, the page shows Turn on Mac access to pick a folder, which opens the setting.
  • When Mac access is off on this Mac and the project’s folder is on another Mac, the menu offers Turn On Mac Access to Choose Another….
  • When you stop sharing the folder, turn off Mac access, or sign out, the project has no folder. There is nothing to clear by hand.
  • People other than the owner see “A folder on” and the Mac’s name, without the path.
  • When you delete a project, its folder stays shared on the Mac.

What teammates can do in the folder

Teammates in the project read and write the files in a read-and-write folder without asking each time. In a read-only folder, they read without asking, and a write still asks you first. Replacing a file that exists always asks. Mac requests work only for the owner’s own work. See Who can use it. Before each message in a project’s conversation, the teammate gets a short block. It names the project, then the notes, when the project has them, then the folder, when it has one:
What the teammate reads
The teammate gets the folder’s full path. For a read-only folder, the last line says to read the files there, and that writing asks first. No files are attached. The teammate reaches the folder through its Mac tools, so the folder works only while your Mac is connected. See When your Mac is connected. An archived project adds nothing.

Who can do what with the folder

Check that it works

Give a project a folder, then ask a teammate in one of the project’s conversations to list the files in the project’s folder. The teammate replies with the files, without a Mac access request.
