# Settings, notifications, and updates on the Mac

> The parts of Settings that exist only in Squad for Mac: This Mac, notifications on this Mac, the Dock badge, Touch ID, updates, crash reports, and signing out.

<Note>Squad for Mac is in private beta.</Note>

The settings for your squad are the same as in the web dashboard. See the [Settings reference](/docs/settings). This page covers only what is different or only on the Mac: the **This Mac** pages, notifications on this Mac, the Dock badge, Touch ID, updates, crash reports, and signing out.

## Open Settings

Settings opens in its own window. Open it in any of these ways:

* Press ⌘, or choose **Squad** > **Settings…**.
* Select the gear at the bottom of the sidebar.
* Choose **Settings…** in the menu bar panel's **⋯** (**More**) menu.

Press ⌘F to put the cursor in **Find a setting**, and Esc to clear it. On the Mac, the results also list screens of the main window, under **In the main window**, for example **Wallet** when you search for a card. Select one to open it there.

## Settings places only on the Mac

| Place | Pages | Owner | Administrator | Collaborator and Viewer |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| **This Mac** | **General**, **Mac access** | Yes | **General** only | **General** only |
| **Notifications** | **On this Mac** (beside **Email and in Squad**, the web's page) | Yes | Yes | Yes |

**Email and in Squad** is the same page as **Notifications** in the web dashboard. **This Mac** and **On this Mac** belong to this Mac, not to your squad. **This Mac** > **General**, **Notifications** > **On this Mac**, and **You** work while you are signed out. The other pages need you to sign in. When a link opens a page that your role cannot see, the page says so and tells you to ask the squad owner.

For the settings pages that the Mac does not have, see [What is different on the Mac](/docs/mac/overview#what-is-different-on-the-mac).

## Connect an app from the Mac

When you connect or reconnect an app in **Settings** > **Apps**, or from a card in chat, the sign-in opens in your browser. It connects the app to the squad that is open in Squad for Mac. When you finish, the browser shows a page that says whether the app connected, with **Back to Squad**, which brings the app to the front where you left it. The same goes for a custom connection that signs in from the Mac.

When a teammate asks you in chat to connect an app that is already connected, the card says that the app is already connected, and as which account when Squad knows it. If the teammate needs another account, select **Connect another account**. The card shows **Connected** only for an account that was connected after the teammate asked, or through the card itself.

## General settings for this Mac

These are in **Settings** > **This Mac** > **General**.

| Card | Setting | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - | - |
| | **Open Squad when you log in** | Starts Squad when you log in to your Mac. "Keeps the menu bar, the notch and notifications on without opening a window." | As set in macOS |
| | **Confirm approvals with Touch ID** | Asks for Touch ID or your Mac's password before some answers and email sends. See [Touch ID](#touch-id). | Off |
| **Teammates** | **Animated teammates** | Shows each teammate as a Squad character that shows what they do: a spinning ring while they work, an orange dot when they need you, and closed eyes when paused. Off keeps the faces still. In the web dashboard, this switch is on **Settings** > **You**. | On |
| **Updates** | Version, **Check for Updates**, and two switches | See [Updates](#updates). | |
| **Shortcuts** | **Delegate from anywhere** | The shortcut that opens the Delegate panel over any app. | ⌥Space |
| **Shortcuts** | **Talk to your squad** | The shortcut that you hold to speak to your squad. | ⌃⌥Space |
| **Shortcuts** | **Chat in the notch** | The shortcut that opens your squad's conversations under the notch. | ⌃⌥C |
| **Shortcuts** | **Hear the answer** | Reads the reply aloud in your teammate's voice when you asked out loud. | On |
| **Shortcuts** | **Stay quiet in meetings** | While another app uses your microphone or camera, or your screen is shared, Squad does not speak, chime, or open the notch by itself. When Squad is quiet now, the setting says why. | On |
| **The notch** | **Squad in the notch** | Your squad lives around the notch and opens when someone needs you. Questions then skip the banner. | On |
| **The notch** | **Play a sound when it opens** | Plays a sound when the notch opens. Shows while **Squad in the notch** is on. | On |
| **The notch** | **The notch shows** | What the notch shows at rest: **Activity**, **Only changes**, or **Only what needs you**. Shows while **Squad in the notch** is on. | **Activity** |
| **The notch** | **Close notch cards with Esc from any app** | Lets Esc in another app close a card that the notch opened by itself. It needs the Accessibility permission for Squad. Shows while **Squad in the notch** is on. | Off |
| | **Share usage and crash reports** | See [Share usage and crash reports](#share-usage-and-crash-reports). | On |

If macOS does not allow the login item, a message says "macOS didn't allow that" and why. For the notch and voice settings, see [Use the notch and the menu bar](/docs/mac/notch-and-menu-bar) and [Delegate, talk, and use Siri](/docs/mac/delegate-voice-siri).

## Notifications on this Mac

These switches are in **Settings** > **Notifications** > **On this Mac**, and they belong to this Mac. They do not change your squad's email and in-app notifications, which are on the **Email and in Squad** page beside them. See [Choose your notifications](/docs/notifications).

| Setting | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Questions** | A notification when a teammate asks you something, or wants to pay with your card, or to save it at a store, and waits for your approval. You can answer yes-or-no questions and short choices from the notification. | On |
| **Email that needs you** | A notification when a teammate's email needs your review or your answer. | On |
| **Replies and mentions** | A notification when a teammate answers you, when a teammate or a person in your squad mentions you, when a run does not finish, and when a teammate finishes a routine. It also decides whether unread replies count in the Dock, the notch, the menu bar, and your other squads. | On |
| **Friday recap** | A quiet reminder on Friday to share your squad's week. It opens **Share your squad's day** on the week. | On |
| **Hold non-urgent decisions** | Urgent and high-priority questions still come right away. The others arrive as one summary at the time that you pick. | Off |
| **Deliver the summary at** | The time of the summary. Shows while **Hold non-urgent decisions** is on. | See [Limits and defaults](/docs/limits-and-defaults#squad-for-mac) |

When notifications are off for Squad in macOS, the page says "Notifications are off for Squad in System Settings, so none of these can reach you." Select **Open System Settings** to turn them on.

### Hold non-urgent decisions

A question counts as urgent when its task's priority is urgent or high. Only questions are held. Email items and payments that wait for your approval are never held. The summary is titled with how many decisions wait, and opening it opens **Needs you**. It comes again each day while a held question is open. Turning the setting off delivers the held questions at once. For the times you can pick and the Friday recap time, see [Limits and defaults](/docs/limits-and-defaults#squad-for-mac).

### What a notification lets you do

| Notification | Actions |
| - | - |
| Yes-or-no question | **Approve**, **Decline** |
| Question with a few options | One button for each option |
| Question that asks you to do something | **I've done this** |
| Question that asks for words | **Answer**, with a box to type in |
| Approval, access, many options, or a question your role cannot answer | **Review**, which opens **Needs you** |
| Email | **Review** |
| A payment that waits for your approval: the teammate's name and "needs your approval" | No button. Select the notification to open **Needs you**. |
| A teammate's reply | **Reply**, with a box to type in. Not for a Viewer. |
| A mention in a group chat | **Reply**, which answers in the group chat. Not for a Viewer. Select the notification to open the group chat. Other mentions have no button. |
| Mac access request | **Allow once** and **Deny**, plus **Always for this folder** on a folder request. See [Let your teammates use your Mac](/docs/mac/mac-access). |

Each action that changes something needs your Mac to be unlocked. A question that someone answers elsewhere leaves Notification Center. A mention in the group chat that is open in front of you comes without a notification. With **Squad in the notch** on, the notch shows new questions, and their notifications go to Notification Center without a banner. While Squad stays quiet in a meeting, notifications still show, without sound.

## The Dock badge

The Squad icon in the Dock shows one number: everything that needs you, in this squad and your other squads, plus the conversations with replies that you have not seen. Replies count only while **Replies and mentions** is on. In conversations with one teammate, only those that you are in (you wrote in them or forked them) count, in this squad and your other squads. Group chats and the Squad chat count every new message. See [Other squads](/docs/mac/notch-and-menu-bar#other-squads). With nothing to count, there is no badge. The menu bar and the notch use the same counts, but they show what needs you and new replies apart. Only the Dock adds them into one number. The badge clears when you sign out. For how many other squads count, see [Limits and defaults](/docs/limits-and-defaults#squad-for-mac).

## Touch ID

With **Confirm approvals with Touch ID** on, Squad asks for Touch ID or your Mac's password before it sends:

* Your answer to an approval question.
* Your answer to a decision question.
* An email draft that you send with **Send now**.

Other questions, for example the ones that ask for access, an action, or words, do not ask for Touch ID.

## Updates

Squad updates itself in the background. The **Updates** card in **This Mac** > **General** has:

* Your version, with a status, for example "You're up to date." and when Squad last checked, or that a new version is available or downloaded.
* **Check for Updates**, which checks now. When an update is downloaded, the button is **Restart to update**.
* **Check for updates automatically**. On by default.
* **Download updates automatically**: downloads updates, which install the next time Squad restarts. On by default. It works only while **Check for updates automatically** is on.

A check in the background never opens a window over your work. When an update is available, a card in the sidebar says so, with **Update**. When it is downloaded, the card says that Squad is ready, with **Restart to update**. Your squad keeps working while Squad restarts.

To check now from the menu, choose **Squad** > **Check for Updates…**. Squad shows the result in its own window. When an update is downloaded, the menu item says **Restart to Update to** and the version. For how often Squad checks, see [Limits and defaults](/docs/limits-and-defaults#squad-for-mac).

## Share usage and crash reports

**Share usage and crash reports**, at the bottom of **This Mac** > **General**, sends "Which parts of Squad get used, and what happened when it crashes or stops responding, so we can fix it. Never what you wrote: no messages, emails or files." It is on by default.

When Squad crashes or stops responding, macOS gives Squad a report the next time it opens. With the switch on, Squad sends the report to the Squad team after you sign in. With the switch off, Squad keeps no report and sends none. Turning it off drops the reports that wait and stops a send that is under way.

If Squad was closed while it was not responding, a message the next time it opens with you signed in says "Squad stopped responding last time, sorry about that." With the switch on, it adds that a report goes to the Squad team, with nothing you wrote. For how many reports Squad keeps, see [Limits and defaults](/docs/limits-and-defaults#squad-for-mac).

## Sign out

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open You">
    In **Settings**, select **You**. The page shows your name and email, your **Squad**, and the **Version** of the app.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign out">
    Select **Sign out**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

When your Mac is online, Squad ends your session on the server. Then it clears your squad and account from the app, including your drafts, your unsent messages, your delivered notifications, and the Dock badge. Your pins stay on the server. Signing out also removes this Mac from Mac access in every squad.

You can also sign out from the screens that show before your squad opens. See [Troubleshoot Squad for Mac](/docs/mac/troubleshooting).

## Mac access

**This Mac** > **Mac access** lets your teammates ask for files, your browser tab, and your screen on this Mac. Only the owner sees this page. See [Let your teammates use your Mac](/docs/mac/mac-access).
