# Keyboard shortcuts

> Every keyboard shortcut in Squad for Mac, grouped by menu and screen.

<Note>Squad for Mac is in private beta.</Note>

Single-letter and number keys on a screen never act while you type in a box. The letters go into the box instead. Most screen keys also do nothing while you hold ⌘, ⌃, or ⌥. Row letters and the **Needs you** keys also work with Caps Lock on.

## App menus

| Menu | Command | Shortcut |
| - | - | - |
| **Squad** | **Settings…** | ⌘, |
| **File** | **Delegate…** (not for a Viewer) | ⌘N |

| **Edit** | **Find Previous** | ⇧⌘G |
| **View** | **Bigger** | ⌘+ or ⌘= |
| **View** | **Smaller** | ⌘- |
| **View** | **Actual Size** | ⌘0 |
| **Go** | **Back** | ⌘\[ |

<span id="use-the-go-menu" />

### The Go menu

The **Go** menu lists **Today**, then every place of the sidebar that you have, in the order of **More**, whatever you pinned: **Email**, **Docs**, **Contacts**, **Wallet**, **Routines**, **Tasks**, **Activity**, **Skills**, and, for the owner and Administrators, **What your squad knows**. Then it lists **Needs you**, **History**, and, for the owner and Administrators while your squad's computer is on, **Computer**. Only **Today**, **Email**, **Docs**, and **Contacts** have number shortcuts, and they stay the same when you pin other places. Each item brings the main window to the front. **Contacts** and **Wallet** show only when they are available for your squad.

**Next New Reply** opens the newest conversation with a reply that you have not seen, across your teammates and group chats. Press it again for the next one.

<span id="change-the-text-size" />

### Text size

**View** > **Bigger**, **Smaller**, and **Actual Size** make the whole window and the menu bar panel bigger or smaller. The notch keeps its size. Squad remembers the size between launches. **Bigger** is off at the largest size, **Smaller** at the smallest, and **Actual Size** at the default size.

<span id="find-words-on-a-page" />

## Find

⌘F, or **Edit** > **Find…**, finds in what you look at, as in a web browser:

| Where you are | What ⌘F does |
| - | - |
| A conversation | Opens **Find in this conversation** over it. The first match is the newest, and **Find Next** goes to earlier ones. It searches the messages that are loaded. **Search earlier messages** loads more. |
| A doc that you read | Opens **Find in this doc** over it. |
| A doc that you edit | Opens the Mac's own find bar over the text. |
| An email | Opens **Find in this email** over the thread. It searches the subject, the people, and each email. A match in quoted text opens the quoted text. |
| **Tasks**, the **Docs** list, **Skills**, and **Memories** in **What your squad knows** | Puts you in the screen's search box: **Search tasks**, **Search docs**, **Search skills**, or **Search everything your squad remembers…**. |
| The **Routines** list | Puts you in **Search routines**, when the list shows it. |
| **Contacts** | Puts you in **Search people and companies**. |
| The **Settings** window | Puts you in **Find a setting**. After you select **Add integration** on **Apps** > **Apps**, it puts you in **Search the catalog**. |
| Anywhere else in the main window | Opens the command palette (⌘K). |

In the find bar:

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| Return or ⌘G | Goes to the next match. The up and down buttons do the same. |
| Shift-Return or ⇧⌘G | Goes to the previous match. |
| Esc | Closes the find bar. **Done** does the same. |

The bar shows where you are, for example "3 of 12", or "No matches". Every match is marked, and the current match is marked more strongly. Opening another conversation, doc, or email closes the bar.

<span id="go-back-and-forward" />

## Back and forward

Squad keeps a history of the places that you open: a screen and what it has open, for example a conversation, a task, an email, a doc, a project, or a History view. Opening a new place clears **Forward**. Switching squads starts the history over. For how many places Squad keeps, see [Limits and defaults](/docs/limits-and-defaults#squad-for-mac).

| Key or gesture | What it does |
| - | - |
| ⌘\[ and ⌘] | **Go** > **Back** and **Forward**. They also bring the main window to the front. |
| ⌘← and ⌘→ | Back and forward, while you are not typing in a box. In a box, they move to the start or the end of the line. While you type in a teammate's browser on your squad's computer, they go to the browser. |
| Mouse back and forward buttons | Back and forward. |
| Trackpad swipe | Back and forward, with the fingers that your Mac's **Swipe between pages** setting uses. A swipe toward the start of the page goes back. With natural scrolling, that is a swipe to the right. An arrow slides in at the edge and fills when letting go will move. With that setting off, a two-finger swipe does nothing. |

⌘← and ⌘→, the mouse buttons, and the swipe work only in the main window, not in Settings, a sheet, or the notch. When there is nowhere to go, the key or the swipe goes to what is under it.

## The menu bar panel

| Key or action | What it does |
| - | - |
| Click the Squad mark | Opens the panel from any app, or closes it. |
| Esc or ⌘Tab | Closes the panel. |
| A click anywhere else | Closes the panel. |

See [The menu bar](/docs/mac/notch-and-menu-bar#the-menu-bar).

## Global shortcuts

These work in any app while Squad runs. Change them in **Settings** > **This Mac** > **General** > **Shortcuts**.

| Setting | Default | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **Delegate from anywhere** | ⌥Space | Opens the Delegate panel over any app. Press it again to close the panel. Not for a Viewer. |
| **Talk to your squad** | ⌃⌥Space | Hold it and speak, then let go to send. A quick tap keeps listening until you tap again. |
| **Chat in the notch** | ⌃⌥C | Opens your squad's conversations under the notch. |

In the Delegate panel, ⌘↩ sends and Esc closes. See [Delegate, talk, and use Siri](/docs/mac/delegate-voice-siri).

## Command palette

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| ⌘K | Opens the palette. |
| ↑ and ↓ | Move through the results. |
| Tab and Shift-Tab | Move through the results, and wrap around. |
| Return | Opens the result. |
| Esc | Closes the palette. |

See [The command palette on Squad for Mac](/docs/search#search-with-the-command-palette).

<span id="move-with-the-keyboard" />

## The sidebar

On a place in the sidebar, for example **Docs** or **Wallet**, while you point to it or Tab is on it:

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| P | **Pin to Sidebar** or **Unpin from Sidebar**. |
| Option-↑ and Option-↓ | Move a pinned place up or down among your pinned places, while the pinned place has the keyboard focus (Tab to it). |
| U | **Mark All Docs as Read**, on **Docs**, when it has a count. |

You can also drag a pinned place to another spot. See [The sidebar on Squad for Mac](/docs/what-squad-is#the-sidebar-on-squad-for-mac).

## Keyboard navigation

Tab reaches every control in every Squad window, whatever your Mac's **Keyboard navigation** setting is. The order is the sidebar, then the screen. In a list, Tab goes through every row in reading order, also the rows off screen, then leaves the list. The focus ring shows only after you press Tab. A click hides it.

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| Tab | Moves to the next control or row. In a box with more than one line, Tab also moves on. |
| Shift-Tab | Moves to the previous control or row. |
| Space or Return | Presses the control in focus. |
| Option-Tab | Types a tab character in a text box. |

Row letters act while you point to the row or Tab is on it. They never act while you type in a box, or in a teammate's browser on your squad's computer.

## Chat

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| Return or ⌘Return | Sends the message. With a picker open, Return picks the highlighted row. |
| Shift-Return or Option-Return | Adds a new line. |
| ⌘⇧A | Opens **Attach**. |
| ↑ | At the start of the box, shows your earlier messages. ↓ goes back toward what you typed. |
| Tab | Picks the highlighted picker row. |
| Esc | Closes the picker. |
| ⌘Return and Esc | Send or cancel when you edit a message. |
| Return and Esc | Save or cancel when you rename a conversation in its header. |
| Double-click | Renames a conversation in a teammate's list, when you can rename it. |
| ⌘C | Copies the selected text. |
| Esc | Clears a text selection. |

Letters on a conversation row, while you point to it or Tab is on it:

| Letter | Command |
| - | - |
| P | **Pin to Sidebar** or **Unpin from Sidebar** (owner only) |
| U | **Mark as Read** or **Mark as Unread** |
| R | **Rename…** |
| F | **Fork Conversation** |
| A | **Archive** |

A group chat's row has U and R. A letter does only what the row's menu offers you. See [The conversation list](/docs/chat#the-conversation-list).

## A teammate's setup

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| ⌘S | **Save changes**. |

## Needs you

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| J or ↓ | Moves to the next question. |
| K or ↑ | Moves to the previous question. |
| A | Approves an approval, or a yes-or-no question. |
| 1 to 9 | Picks that option. On a yes-or-no question, 1 approves and 2 declines. |
| ⌘Return | Does the main action of the question, for example **Approve**, **I've done this**, **Send answer**, or **Send back to** and the teammate's name. On an email draft, it is **Send now**. |
| U | Undoes your last answer. |
| Return | Sends your answer in the **Something else…** box. |
| Esc | Closes the **Something else…** box. |

The keys act on the question with the stronger border. A and the digits do nothing while a resolved question is open, or for a role that cannot answer. See [Needs you on Squad for Mac](/docs/tickets#on-squad-for-mac-private-beta).

## Tasks

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| ⌘⇧N | **New task**, on the board. Not for a Viewer. |
| ⌘Return, or Return in the title box | Creates the task. |
| Esc | Cancels the **New task** sheet and keeps your draft. |
| Return and Esc | Save or cancel when you rename a task. |

## Email

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| J and K | Open the next or the previous email in the list. |
| ⌘F | Finds words in the open email. To find an email, type in **Search email** above the list. |
| ⌘⇧N | **New email**. For the owner and Administrators, when the squad has an inbox. |
| ⌘Return | **Send** in the compose or reply sheet. |
| Esc | **Cancel** in the compose or reply sheet. |

See [Tasks on Squad for Mac](/docs/missions#on-squad-for-mac-private-beta) and [Email on Squad for Mac](/docs/email#on-squad-for-mac-private-beta).

## Docs

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| Return | Creates the doc after you type its title in **New doc**. |
| ⌘S | **Save**, while you edit a doc. |

## Skills

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| ⌘S | **Save**, while you edit a skill's instructions. |
| Esc | **Cancel**, while you edit a skill's instructions. |

See [Edit a skill's instructions](/docs/skills#edit-a-skills-instructions).

## History

These keys work while no run is open.

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| D | **Day** view. |
| W | **Week** view. |
| M | **Month** view. |
| S | **Schedule** view. |
| T | Back to today. |
| ← and → | An older or a newer period. Not in **Month**. |
| Esc | Closes the run that you opened. |

## Routines and triggers

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| ⌘Return | Saves or creates the routine or trigger that you edit. |
| Esc | Cancels the routine or trigger editor, or closes a routine's detail sheet. |
| Space, Return, or Enter | Opens the calendar chip in focus. |

See [Routines on Squad for Mac](/docs/scheduled#on-squad-for-mac-private-beta) and [History on Squad for Mac](/docs/runs-and-health#on-squad-for-mac-private-beta).

## Projects

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| X | **Remove from Project**, on the row that you point to or that Tab is on. |
| R, A, B, D | **Rename…**, **Archive Project**, **Bring Back**, and **Delete Project…**, on a project's row in the sidebar that you point to or that Tab is on. A letter does only what the row's menu offers you. |
| ⌘K | Finds projects and runs **New project**. |

See [Group conversations into projects](/docs/chat#group-conversations-into-projects).

## The notch

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| ⌃⌥C | Opens **Chat in the notch**. |
| Esc | Closes **Chat in the notch** and goes back to your app. |
| Esc | Hides the notch's strip or peek, while the pointer is on it, until something new comes in. |
| Esc | While the pointer is on the notch, closes the card it shows, or stops a reply that it reads aloud. |

With **Close notch cards with Esc from any app** on, Esc in another app also closes a card that the notch opened by itself. Your app still gets the Esc. See [Use the notch and the menu bar](/docs/mac/notch-and-menu-bar).

## Contacts

| Key | Where | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| D, M, A, O | One of your steps on **Today**, in **Needs you**, or on **Contacts** > **Home** | **Done**, **Move the date…**, **Ask** and your chief of staff's name **to do it**, and **Open the deal** or **Open** and the person's name. A Viewer has only O. |
| D, M, L, X | An open step on a deal | **Done** (or **Kept**), **Missed** (or **Broken**), **Move the date…**, and **Drop it**. |
| S, N | A pair in **Review** | **Same person** and **Not the same**. |

The letters act on the row that you point at or that Tab is on, never while you type. A letter does only what you can do on that row. See [Contacts on Squad for Mac (private beta)](/docs/contacts#on-squad-for-mac-private-beta).

## Other

| Key | Where | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| ⌘C | **Share your squad's day** | **Copy image**. |
| Esc | Most sheets | **Cancel** or **Close**. |
| Esc | **Find a setting** in **Settings** | Clears the search. |
| Esc | **Pin to the sidebar**, **Share your squad's day**, and **Forget all memories?** | Closes the sheet. |
| Return | Sign-in screen | Submits the form. |
